Pros of Self-ligating Braces
  • The self-ligating system has light high-technology shape-memory wires that move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments.
  • Self-ligating is a new clinically proven treatment approach to straightening teeth which enhances your facial aesthetics – usually without extractions or rapid palatal expanders.
  • Self-ligating braces use a slide or clip mechanism to hold the wire in place, instead of the little elastic coloured ties used in ‘normal’ braces. As a result these braces allow teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably. The elastic coloured ties also attract and collect plaque, and so avoiding these elastic ties makes dental hygiene easier during treatment
  • Self-ligating braces are designed to be discreet, comfortable and easy to keep clean

Cons of Self-ligating Braces

  • Elastic bands need to be worn for the majority of the treatment in most cases
  • Sometimes patients feel that the brackets are quite prominent, as they do not have the cushioning effect that you get from the coloured rings on a ‘normal’ brace.
  • Minor detailing may take a little longer.

Self-ligating braces are designed to be discreet, comfortable and easy to keep clean. Without the elastic ties used in conventional braces, which attract and collect plaque, self-ligating braces make dental hygiene easy during treatment. Plus these systems are available in clear brackets as an alternative for the more image conscious patients.

With the Damon and In-ovation Brace Systems you often find …

  • The treatment can avoid any extractions
(as in case 4 with the unerupted canine)
  • Overall treatment time is reduced
  • Fewer practice visits
  • Greater comfort

Damon system

The Damon System is a type of self-ligating bracket system, which uses revolutionary braces and wires; it is a whole new way of treating patients. This technique can allow us to avoid the removal of adult teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space which traditional treatment often requires. An extraction approach in conventional treatment can leave a narrower dental arch and a flatter facial profile. Self-ligating braces produce fuller natural smiles achieved with light biologically-sensible forces, and are designed to enhance the overall facial result of each patient.
